Since La Lune Collection’s inception in 1979 – long before eco-friendly practices became fashionable – we have been deeply concerned about the environment, particularly deforestation caused by the lumber and furniture industries. Today, La Lune Collection stands as one of the most eco-friendly furniture companies in the world.
Here are the top 10 reasons why:
1. La Lune harvests only fast growing and invasive wood species such as poplar, cedar, and willow, to produce of all its products.
2. All wood is harvested near the factory in Wisconsin, reducing transportation inefficiencies and environmental impact while eliminating any rainforest deforestation.
3. Harvesting is done by hand using low-tech, eco-friendly methods, allowing full control and supervision of the process.
4. La Lune’s unique, low-tech manufacturing methods require minimal processing and are both efficient and environmentally responsible.
5. The turn-of-the-century factory buildings and machinery have been carefully recycled and restored, incorporating efficient energy use.
6. La Lune carries no finished furniture inventory and efficiently manufactures products “just in time”, which slashes waste by producing what is needed when it is needed.
7. All La Lune indoor finishes are water-based, non-polluting, non-toxic, and non-flammable, and are applied using dip tanks to prevent air pollution.
8. La Lune furniture is designed and built to last for generations, reducing the environmental impact associated with disposable, cheaply made, non-degradable furniture.
9. Human sustainability is a core part of La Lune’s environmental mission. In 1986, La Lune relocated to an abandoned factory in a central-city neighborhood and helped restore the neighborhood now known as Riverwest. In 1989, owner Mario Costantini co-founded the Holton Youth Center near the La Lune factory.
10. La Lune’s furniture, factory, and company history serve as educational tools for eco-friendly manufacturing. School and civic groups of all ages regularly tour the factory to learn the La Lune philosophy and process directly from founder Mario Costantini.
